Supermarkets Back Fairtrade Scheme

Supermarkets throughout the UK are offering more and more Fairtrade goods in response to shoppers’ demands for ethical products.

Sales of Fairtrade foods grew by almost 50 per cent last year - proof that customers want to know farmers in developing countries are being paid a fair price for their produce.

Flowers are the first non-food product to carry the Fairtrade symbol but many more, including footballs and fabrics, are expected to follow as demand continues to grow.

Fairtrade roses – the first flowers to gain the symbol - are imported from Kenya where growers get a guaranteed minimum wage plus eight per cent of the export price.

Ten years ago only Fairtrade tea, coffee and chocolate were available in supermarkets but now more than £2 million is spent at checkouts every week in the UK on Fairtrade foods.

But only goods that have undergone careful checks can earn the Fairtrade mark to stop unscrupulous firms cashing in on the growing trade.
