Oxfam Campaigners support Mayor Ken Livingstone
to make London a Fairtrade City
Oxfam activists from all over London joined the Mayor of London,
Ken Livingstone, on 11th March as he pledged his support to make
London a Fairtrade city.
The event was organised by the Greater London Authority, Oxfam
London Campaigns staff and the Fairtrade Foundation and took place
at the GLA's City Hall during Fairtrade Fortnight.
While people tucked into delicious Fairtrade products, Ken talked
about why he wants London to become a Fairtrade city, "I believe
that a world city has world responsibilities, and the food and drink
we consume is more than just a commodity or luxury, but affects
the lives of millions of people in developing countries across the
world."
The GLA plans to meet Fairtrade Foundation criteria within the
next six months. This includes: passing a resolution supporting
Fairtrade, ensuring a range of fairly traded products are available
in approximately 740 of London's shops, as well as in community
organisations and local businesses.
Oxfam campaigners were also invited to the GLA evening reception,
sponsored by the Co-op, where the Mayor Ken and BBC news reader
and patron of the Fairtrade Foundation, George Alagiah, looked forward
to working with Oxfam and other organisations, businesses and retailers
to achieve fairer terms of trade for people in poorer countries.
Oxfam certainly welcomes the opportunity to promote further initiatives
including Fairtrade through the Make Trade Fair campaign.
For many years, Oxfam campaigners have played a great part in helping
to increase Fairtrade product sales and thereby strengthening the
position of farmers and workers in the developing world. But they
also play a crucial role through the Make Trade Fair campaign, in
urging large companies and governments to ensure that poor farmers
get a decent price for their produce and don't have to compete with
cheap, heavilysubsidised northern imports, and that people can get
access to vital medicines to treat killer diseases.
