Kent Business Initiative to Raise Money for the Third World

A challenge issued to Kent businesses could raise thousands of pounds for poverty stricken producers in Africa and other third world countries.

The challenge comes from Fairtrade Vending, a company that has designed and distributes a new drinks machine selling only Fairtrade products. Fairtrade is one of the charities involved in the Make Poverty History campaign.

Managing Director, Mike Steel, is aiming to persuade ten per cent of Kent businesses and organisations to install the machines.

He said that, if he met his target, it would make a huge difference to suppliers in Africa and Columbia.

"There are approximately 36,000 businesses and organisations in Kent. If just ten per cent of them installed the machines for staff and customers, it would increase the money going to Fairtrade by more than £80,000 every year."

Registered users of fair trade products receive a set minimum price covering the cost of production and a premium that must be used to invest in the producer's local community.

Workers and growers decide democratically how to invest the extra income to: improve their homes, improve education and healthcare, build roads invest in business and diversify into other crops and income generating products.

Mr Steel said that interest was already being shown by organisations such as hospitals and universities.

"People understand that it isn't enough to write off the debt owed by third world countries. We need to support producers to help them become self-sufficient. All Fairtrade products come from ethical producers and the money goes directly to those in an ethical production line."

The machines carry Fairtrade designs and logos and are immediately distinctive so users know that the drinks being sold are all from ethical producers. Unusually, the drinks should cost no more than those from other vending machines.

Businesses and organisations willing to take up the challenge should get in touch with Mike Steel at Fairtrade Vending.
